The Universal Periodic Review (UPR) is a process which involves a review of the human rights records of all UN Member States and allows each State to declare what actions they have taken to improve the human rights situations in their countries and to fulfil their human rights obligations. Malaysia was under review last year.
Nine countries have commented on the status of our treatment and recognition of Orang Asal rights and made several recommendations.
We are appalled to learn that Malaysia has rejected most of these recommendations, including core recommendations related to the SUHAKAM National Inquiry into the Land Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
In this regard, all three regional offices of JOAS or the Indigenous Peoples Network of Malaysia will hold a press conference on Wednesday as detailed above.
