“Shahnaz A Majid has told the Kuala Lumpur Syariah High Court that she lived in a mansion in Petra Jaya, Sarawak, between 1993 and 2000 while married to Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib. She described her ex-husband’s extravagant jetsetting lifestyle that involved travel and shopping all over Europe and Asia last year”

In the early 90’s, indigenous peoples in Sarawak were being forcibly moved from their native lands by companies owned by the Taib family or by Taib crony logging companies. Whilst Taib and his family were making money out of the Borneo rainforest and living the life of luxury in various locations across the globe, one of the world’s most important eco-systems was being destroyed and its native peoples were disappearing with it. Today, the Taib family continue to make their money at the expense of Sarawak’s indigenous communities and what’s left of the Sarawak jungle is being turned into palm oil plantations and vast hydro-electric dams that will ultimately benefit the Taib family.
